Deceived while Shopping
While shopping for a pair of sunglasses on Tuesday, I stumbled my way into Sunglass Hut in the Hulen Mall. You may be wondering why this encounter would have anything to do with the course, but let me explain. As I am browsing the selection, the Sunglass Hut employee was grabbing tons of sunglasses off of the shelf to bring me options. He explained that they are having a sale today where if I buy one pair, I can get another pair for 40% off. In my mind, I knew this was not a new sale. They have been advertising the same deal for years upon years. I was simply there to get one pair and one pair only. When I finally selected my desired pair, the salesman told me that I can “protect” the sunglasses for only $35 which provides a one year warranty in the case that the glasses break. It sounded like a good deal, and I decided to protect my new sunglasses for $35 since I am prone to breaking things. The salesman was trying to also sell me the cleaning kit, but I knew that a glasses cleaning kit was unnecessary. I decided to opt out of that option. When I was checking out, the salesman mentioned that he will include the cleaning kit for free. I thought he was being nice, and I thanked him. I looked at my receipt before I left, and it showed a charge for $15 and a charge for $20. The $15 was for the cleaning kit while the $20 charge was for the glasses protection plan. I brought this up to the salesman, and he said that he had to ring it up like that so I could get the cleaning kit free of charge. I did not think much of it, and headed home. While thinking about my purchase on my drive home, I decided to look up how much the “Sunglass Hut Protection Plan” costs $19.99. I had just realized that the salesman had lied to me. In order to make another sale, he advertised the plan as $35 in which he charged me for the plan and the unwanted glasses cleaning kit. It honestly left me feeling a little tricked, like I had fallen for something I knew better than to believe. Next time, I’ll definitely be double-checking the receipt before I walk out of the store.
Hi Sara, Great blog. I read this last week and commented on it, but apparently I failed to publish my comments. Great story, though. Our economic system is competitive, and unfortunately predatory. Scammers have no conscience when it comes to making profits. It seems like nearly everything sold offers "protection plans." Hope you got a nice pair of sunglasses, though. Glad to see you back in class.
